Swifts 7 Biggleswade 36
The strong wind and the greasy pitch were a big leveller but organisation, grit and determination told in the end.
Biggleswade were not at their best but stuck to the task and ground out another convincing win.
“We won the game not playing well” was the post-match verdict of Skipper Jake Devereux, “but that is what potential champions do!”.
Conditions were uncomfortable for spectators and worse for the players. A wet, squelchy pitch and a gusty wind saw endless spills of the ball, wayward passes snatched by the gale and lottery lineouts.
But the greater skill of Biggleswade under pressure was very evident. If one Biggy player dropped the ball a team mate was there to rectify the mishap.
Biggleswade tackled in pairs cutting down every move. They exerted so much pressure that flaws were exposed in the Swift’s defence. Biggleswade then turned these into attacking options.
The wind was behind Biggleswade in the first half. Sam Woods used the elements to good effect to push Biggleswade downfield. But dogged defence from the Swifts kept Biggy at bay until the 12th minute when full back Alex Borg went through for the first try.
Tom Anderson scored the second when Swifts knocked on letting Biggleswade through the defensive line. Sam Woods added the conversion having had his first attempted kick pulled wide of the upright by the whirling wind.
It was twenty-five minutes before Biggleswade scored again. The back line started a move from the half-way line with Borg again getting the touchdown.
With the last move of the first half captain Jake Devereux was on hand after a forward drive to finish off the move.
However, was 24-0 enough to secure victory now they were against the wind wondered the Biggy faithful?
It was to turn out to be so. Swifts did not have the same power or pace as the visitors although they did manage one converted try.
But once they had shot their bolt the superior fitness of Biggleswade shon through.
They scored another two tries to wrap up their eleventh win on the trot all with a bonus point. They average six tries a game so are attractive to watch.
Next up are Huntingdon at Langford Road. In the away tie the score was 28-14 to Biggleswade. There is a pre-match buffet to enjoy.
