Black Horse 24 - 69 Biggleswade 2nd XV

Biggleswade 2nd XV travelled to Hertford on Saturday to play Black Horse, looking to build upon their opening game of 2020.

The opposition have recently moved down from the division above so Biggy were unsure of what to expect. Encouragingly, the 2nd team included three of the current u17s squad (Jack Mullholland-Dear, Chris Horgan and Tom Richardson), who all scored and had great games. It’s a sign of the exciting potential coming through the Biggleswade youth sides.

Biggleswade made a rip-roaring start, scoring four tries before the opposition were able to reply. With the wind at their back, there were opportunities to regularly gain territory and provide a platform from which to attack.

Shaymus Hancock and debutant Richardson both helped themselves to hat-tricks. Ben Cowling, also making his 2nds debut, played brilliantly throughout, looking a threat with his speed and handling skills.

It was Biggy’s best attacking performance of the season; all the tries were well-worked team scores, showing evidence of the players’ developing skill set.

Equally impressive was the defensive effort, working consistently well against Blackhorse’s big carrying game, apart from a few inevitable lapses against an opposition pack with a big size advantage.

Playing into the wind in the second half was more challenging, but Biggy communicated well and problem-solved to ensure they played in the right areas of the pitch.

Overall, it was a step up in quality and an impressive performance from the 2nds.  Next weekend there is a shot at redemption when the 2nds travel again to Southgate who knocked them them out of the cup in a 35-23 victory. The winning team will take 2nd place in the league.
