Former Club Captain's Line-up at Reunion Day

More than 100 former players turned up to share memories at Biggleswade Rugby Club’s 70th Anniversary Season Reunion Day on Saturday.

The Langford Road clubhouse was packed for a pre-match buffet and an afternoon and evening of celebration, as players from every decade of the club’s history met up, including some players from the club’s first ever league side of 1949-1950.

Fifteen former first team captains attended (included two who interrupted their warm-up on the pitch to join a chairman and captains' photo line-up on the Biggy spectators’ mound).

The current 1st XV did the club proud with a 34-27 home league victory against Deepings in front of the watching old boys (whilst the 2nds earned 5-5 draw against Bishop Stortford Abbots) and young and old players shared a drink or two and some songs in the bar afterwards.

“Ours really is a special club and we are proud of our long history and the friendships and bonds we’ve forged over the years,” said Club President John Thoday. "It was a wonderful day and it was great to see so many old friends, many of whom had travelled a long way to be there, and some of whom who had moved away from the area who hadn't seen eachother for 40 or 50 years,” he added.

“The best thing is that as much as the day was about celebrating the past, the club can also look forward - we’ve got a thriving youth and minis section, and some of those boys and girls will be the ‘old’ players in 30 years time at our 100th celebrations!”
