Biggleswade Under 15s 41-19 Leighton Buzzard U15s
Biggleswade hosted Leighton Buzzard on Sunday morning on the first team pitch. Most of the squad had travelled to London the day before to see the Barbarians play at Twickenham and had watched a great performance of attacking rugby from the Baa Baas women after the men’s game was cancelled.
The Biggy Boys, inspired by the running rugby they’d seen, attacked from the start and made holes in the Buzzard defence at will. Dylan Robinson broke two tackles and ran 30 metres from the kick-off, supporting players retained the ball at the ruck, and scrum-half Spencer Hall passed in-field to Logan Williams who showed great power and determination to score Biggy’s first try.
Biggleswade were determined to perform well against Buzzards. who had defeated them earlier in the season. Spencer scored his first try of the day after some fine play from the forward pack – Ben Woodward in particular making ground with hard running lines. Buzzards hit back with a break from the base of the ruck.
The home team’s scrum worked well in the first half, providing clean ball for the backs. Josh Curson made a break from the centre position, then good support from Aaron Crawley and Thomas Forshaw allowed the ball to be kept in hand. Dylan made a jinking dart for the line only to be stopped short – he made an offload off the floor to the supporting Harry Burke who reached over to score his first try in youth rugby for Biggleswade. The conversion was missed leaving the score at 19-7.
There was a noticeable increase in the intensity of play from the U15s this week, particularly at the ruck where they got to the breakdown sooner, and outmuscled Buzzards, winning their own ball and much of the opponent’s ball.
Logan took full advantage of the space created from quick ruck ball and charged through tacklers to score two more tries and complete his hat-trick before half-time. Dylan converted one, despite falling over during the drop-kick! Half-time score: 31-7
The second half was much more even as Buzzards hit back with two tries after missed tackles and poor discipline from Biggy. Captain Fin Taylor called on his team to improve and led from the front with a big carry into the Buzzard 22. Duncan Lewis provided great support play but good defence kept them from scoring. They were soon on the attack again, however, and another solid scrum on the half-way line allowed the backs to use a combination of good ball handling and timing of the pass from Dylan and Josh to put Aaron into space to show his wheels and score in the corner.
Fitness was beginning to show against a team using four rolling subs, but it didn’t stop Spencer breaking from the base of the scrum before shrugging off two defenders to score the last try of the match. Final Score 41-19.
