Huntingdon Stags 14 Biggleswade 28
Biggleswade continued their winning ways and revenged last year’s close defeat away from home.
Stags had arranged a Family Fun Day with a barbecue, bouncy castles and warm-up games for their mini and junior players. The weather was much cooler than last week with a gusty wind.
“We really did mess up their day by raining on their parade” was the post-match comment from skipper Jake Devereux. He continued his try scoring habit by getting Biggleswade’s fourth try for the bonus point.
Huntingdon who had conceded over fifty points at St Neots but scored thirty of their own had narrowly beaten St Ives in the first league match.
Biggleswade had changed their Centre Partnership from last weekend. Elliot Tunstall moved from the back row to the centre to join Gavin Taylor bringing back a well-established centre Partnership from last season. The new combination had to work hard in defence and attack. They just about held their own but sometimes needed the speedsters in the back three to help them out. Jack Sharp, Tom Anderson and Quinn Heath were seen speeding across the park to stem a Stags breakaway.
It proved to be a tough encounter with the result in doubt until the last quarter. Biggleswade just had the edge apart from a period either side of the break. But they ended strongly scoring the decisive try in the last five minutes. Which was a cracker!
A penalty into the corner saw a clean catch. Jake Deveraux sped round the front of the line with Kyle Loan in support. A show of the ball with a swerve inside saw the captain over the line for his third try in three games this season.
The Biggleswade pack just about had the edge on their opposite numbers. James Emerson dominated the line outs and put himself about in the loose.
The Biggy scrum disrupted Stags ball by wheeling strongly but they did lose a strike, against the head, almost unheard of these days. Although in the catch and drive from the lineout they trundled with enthusiasm with some backs joining in the fun.
Scorers were Jake Devereux, Sam Woods, Dan Page and Gavin Taylor. Sam Woods added 4 conversions.
Team: Arran Pickering (Matt Cowley), Dom Nott, Kyle Loan, James Emerson, Dan Page, James West (Jensen Beal), Jake Devereux ©, Ben Reedman, Joe Rowntree, Sam Woods, Quinn Heath, (Kareem Davis) Gavin Taylor, Elliot Tunstall, Tom Anderson, Jack Sharp.
The next fixture is a is at home to Luton kicking off at 3pm. The visitors have had an odd start to their season winning one easily and losing two with over seventy points being scored against them in one tie.
