Biggleswade 1st XV v Sharnbrook in the Beds Vase

Biggleswade 1st XV 42 - 0 Sharnbrook & Colworth RUFC

Biggleswade notched up an impressive score in the their first round Beds Vase cup match played under floodlights at Langford Road on Wednesday night.

Biggy got their first points on the board after five minutes when they won a penalty for not rolling away.

Soaking up lots of pressure in defence, Biggy took possession and played a wide game spreading the ball from wing to wing. Great pressing led to winger Tom Anderson scoring on the left.

From the re-start, Biggy fielded the ball on a clearance kick, giving Anderson a run from one 22 to the other. Good lineout play set up yet another run by Anderson from his 22 again, but he was stopped by the full back before he could score.

Biggy were starting to find their feet. Strong rucking set up Andy Burke to take the ball deep into opposition territory, and a couple of passes allowed scrum-half Luke Gadsby to run over and ground the ball.

Biggy were now working out of their half with ease. Biggy stole a Sharnbrook lineout and Burke found a gap and stretched his legs before offloading to Jake Devereux, who passed on to Gadsby for his second try, this one right under the posts (converted by Elliot Tunstall).

The home side came out in the second half determined to build on their 20-0 score, putting pressure on the catcher from the kick-off. Chris Simons made a great run into Sharnbrook’s 22, advantage was played from a high tackle, and then a second penalty was given for offside. Biggy kicked for line-out and the pressure was rewarded, with a catch and drive leading to Graham Williams scoring tight in the corner.

From a scrum on Sharnbrook’s 10m line, No 8 Kyle Loan took the ball into the danger area, and Biggy worked their pods well. With the 5 metre channel to work in, Simons sliced his way through for a try.

Sharnbrook worked hard to get into Biggy’s territory but Biggleswade stood strong against the pressure, winning back possession when needed and kicking clear.

Strong pressing and running from the home team’s forwards and backs put Sharnbrook back under the cosh, with Matt Rowley getting close to scoring but being held up. Loan picked and went from a scrum and grounded to turn pressure into points again.

A long clearance kick bounced awkwardly for Sharnbrook’s full back and straight into the hands of the chasing Tunstall for a breakaway try under the posts, which he then converted.

Sharnbrook dug deep to make their way into Biggy territory but Biggy once again took  possession to clear. The last 20 minutes was spent between the 22s, with only a penalty given to Biggy ending up over the tryline but being cleared by Sharnbrook’s full back.

The last play saw a succession of infringements, with Biggleswade giving away several penalties for offsides or not rolling away - allowing Sharnbrook to threaten their tryline at the death - but they stood strong and cleared their line just in time for the final whistle.
