Biggleswade U15s joined forces with St Ives on Sunday for an East Midlands Cup match against St Neots.
The new alliance meant the two clubs could both field a 15-a-side team for the first time this season.
The joint side - christened the Biggy Bulls - was buoyed on by a good-natured support, and the Biggleswade boys showed great heart and fighting spirit alongside their new teammates in the first half.
Attacking opportunities were limited but some delicious backs moves involving Josh Curson and strong running from Declan O’Neill saw them make ground up field.
St Neots managed to regain possession and looked favourite to score down their left wing until Dylan Robinson put in a crunching tackle to deny them.
They did score soon after, despite some fine tackling from Fin Taylor, Ollie Wootley and Toby Adams.
More defensive work was required for the rest of the first half, with one of the highlights involving Kristian Hawkins wrestling the ball from three players and breaking free up field. From the next phase, Aaron Crawley showed his pace on the wing to beat two defenders before being stopped near the opposition 22.
Cameron Matthews was equally busy on the right wing, combining with the ever-energetic Dylan Lee to tackle anything that moved.
St Neots played well in the second half and took full advantage of any mistakes from the Biggy Bulls to score more tries and win the game. They move on to the next round of the Cup, while the Biggy Bulls move into the Plate competition with a match against Towcester on Sunday Jan 30.
