Biggleswade continued their winning ways beating 4th placed St Ives comfortably. The visitors who averaged forty points a game before meeting the Biggy Boys and got nothing.
Biggleswade were almost unchanged from last week with just a couple of tweaks in the backs line up. Jack Sharp was on holiday so Quinn Heath took on the scrum half role. Alex Borg absent for so many years from the top flight returned at full-back and loved it.
But the surprise of the afternoon was that Liam Dunne was on the bench returning to the club after adventures elsewhere.
St Ives kicked off towards the clubhouse on another grey afternoon with a freshly rolled pitch. Biggleswade gathered cleanly and immediately launched one of many probing attacks. But their Achilles heel in the opening exchanges was penalties against them at the breakdown.
In all Biggleswade ran in eight tries although Sam Woods had an off day with place kicks and only added two conversions his kicks from hand made enormous yardage for the team. Forwards like nothing better than going forward to another line-out.
The jumpers in the line were Jensen Beal, Ben Reedman and James Emerson. They caught cleanly and disrupted St Ives throw ins.
But Jensen also had another string to his bow. He likes nothing better than stopping an opposition player in their tracks and winning the turnover. He certainly brings the crowd alive with his big hits.
Biggleswade defended like tigers all afternoon determined to keep St Ives out.
The first try came as they forced a knock on at the edge of their “22”. Will Evans who had a great game scoring a hat trick made the yardage with a deft off-load which led to Biggleswade’s first try.
Biggleswade have learnt the art of turning pressure into points; a very necessary ingredient for successful sides.
Tom Anderson so often the play maker scored the second try and there were others for Dom Nott and Alex Borg before the break earning Biggleswade a bonus point.
In the second half Biggleswade rang the changes making the most of the replacements rule. It seemed harder going with the Biggy Boys doing more defending than attacking. But once they got a sniff of a score, they made the most of it adding another four tries.
The fast boys scored most of them but the biggest cheer went to prop Ben Yates who was in close support for try number six.
Winger Will Evans scored the last two showing a good turn of speed toasting his opposite number while swerving around him.
Best Bit was Nil Points Against
The last game of the opening round of league matches is in two weeks’ time against St Neots on the Common. They have lost only twice to Stewarts and St Ives the latter put sixty points on them. St Neots have piled up the points but often had thirty scored against them at the same time.
