Biggleswade 2nd XV 24 - 17 Letchworth 3s

After a frustrating draw at home last weekend, Biggleswade 2nd XV were at home again in a rearranged league game against local rivals Letchworth. 

The match started with Biggleswade looking the more dangerous. However after a several attacks, including a shot at goal, Biggy couldn’t find a way over the line. 

In the end the first score came from a penalty try. After a kick was launched for the backs to chase, a Letchworth player took out a Biggleswade chaser and the referee awarded a penalty try to give the home side a 7-0 lead. 

Clearly put out by this decision, Letchworth came back firing. Despite having less territory they continued to look dangerous in attack. In the end it was a good bit of offensive work, along with poor communication in defence from Biggy, that saw Letchworth go over for an unconverted try. 

With both sides trying to gain control, the first half was a frantic affair. Both sides were guilty of indiscipline and basic errors but also contested possession well which as a result saw the half time score settle at 7-5. 

The Biggleswade team talk centred around the need for discipline and greater intensity in defence, but after the break, Letchworth had other ideas. Following a burst from a forward around the half way mark, a kick ahead and lucky bounce which saw the ball miss the Biggleswade defender, Letchworth again went over in the corner to take the lead 7-10. 

The Biggleswade forwards responded and soon went on several driving plays which resulted in Tom Torne powering over for his first Biggleswade try to make it 12-10. 

Biggleswade continued to look dangerous, but, like their opposition, they couldn’t quite find the killer pass or make the break needed to breach the line. 

Eventually though Biggy’s persistence  paid off with two tries from the backs. Luke Gadsby went over first and then Dave Leslie showed he still has some pace. This stretched the home side’s lead to 24-10. 

Both teams were beginning to tire from the physical nature of the game, but with just 5 minutes left, Letchworth’s scrum bulldozed over the Biggleswade line for a try, making the last few minutes a tense affair with a catchable seven point lead. 

In the end, Biggleswade held out for the win, which sees them stay above Letchworth in the league. Post-game Cameron Plant (pictured below with 2nd Team Captain Jack Unite) won the Captain’s Choice award for November. 

Next weekend the first XV travel to Kempston whilst the 2nd XV take on Enfield 3rd XV.
