Biggleswade Men’s 1st XV 31-0 Stamford College Old Boys
Biggleswade 1st XV opened their league campaign on Saturday with a big win over Stamford College Old Boys.
The home crowd was boosted by a number of club members new and old after Club President Dave Tysom held a VIP lunch ahead of the game to kick the season off with a bang.
Biggleswade started well with a strong defensive line. The first scrum showed how Biggy were very much the smaller of the two packs, but technique and body position saw them power the bigger Stamford players off the ball.
Strong carries from the front row of Dom Nott, Luke Dillinger and Kyle Loan enabled Biggy to move quickly up the field, but the visitors’ defence stood fast and resisted wave after wave of attack. The pressure eventually told and Biggleswade’s first try came when number 8 Matt Horgan picked up from the base of the scrum and off-loaded to Richard Sinclair, who scored on the blind side.
The restart saw the Biggy forwards carve through the Stamford defence, linking perfectly with the waiting back line who ran some strong lines before handing over to second row Jack Diemer, who strode the last 10 metres and scored under the posts.
The final points of the first half came from a Biggy lineout where the forwards caught and created a rolling maul and pushed over for a great forwards’ try, making the score 19-0.
Stamford came out fighting at the start of the second period and put pressure on the Biggleswade defence, but were unable to convert this into points.
A huge tackle from Centre Ollie Vagg changed the direction of play and got the home team back in gear. Jakub Grabowski took an inside pass to slice through the gaps starting to appear in the Stamford line, pushing the visitors back.
More strong interlinking play between the back row and back line led to Gareth Rutt scoring Biggy’s fourth try of the game, securing the bonus point.
The final blow was delivered by Man of the Match Jake Devereux, as he broke through a number of tackles to score under the posts.
Credit to the Stamford team for never letting their heads drop and fighting till the end. The final score was 31-0, a great start to the season for Biggleswade who look to take on Thorny away this Saturday.
