Cheshunt Men’s 3rds 5-24 Biggleswade Men’s 2nds
Following their victory against OAs last week, another away win for Biggleswade's 2nd XV saw them retain their spot at the top of the league table.
Having lost the toss and being asked to play up the slope, the first half was always going to be a challenge for the visitors. The home side used their kicking game, and their knowledge of the pitch’s bumps and dips, to pin Biggy in their half. The constant to and fro meant Biggleswade’s fitness was tested with what amounted to shuttle runs, with the forwards in particular grateful for any break in play.
Slow to start, Biggleswade went behind when Cheshunt broke the line and scored in the corner to establish a 5-0 lead. But Biggy's confidence began to build and although a few handling errors prevented them from replying immediately, their persistent quality attacking soon reaped rewards.
With Cheshunt down a player after several off-the-ball shots, Jake Devereux was able to drive through half a gap. With the conversion missed, the game was all square.
As half time approached, Biggleswade pounced again and after a massive break on the outside, Jacob Martin was on hand to provide support and show good pace to score, putting his side 10-5 up at the break.
The second half saw an improved defensive performance from the 2nds and despite the size of the Cheshunt pack, the tackles kept flying in.
With the home side tiring, there were further opportunities and Luke Dillinger and Jack Davidson both added their names to the scoresheet, with the scoreline enhanced by two conversions from Man of the Match, George Chapman.
Overall, it was an impressive performance form the 2nd team who remain top of the Herts & Middlesex Merit 4 NE table. They are next in action at home against Tabard 2nds on Saturday 30 October.
