Warm Up Match - 24th August 2024
Biggleswade 22 Ampthill XV 15
When Saracens Amateurs pulled out Ampthill replaced them at short notice with a competitive outfit. The outcome was in doubt until the final whistle.
Biggleswade ran in four tries converting one of them to three from the visitors. “It was a good warm up for the season ahead,” was the verdict of forwards coach Graham Williams who thanked Ampthill for coming over at short notice.
Club captain Jake Deveraux was missing because of a family commitment. Another regular las season Liam Dunne was acting as Best Man at a wedding. Both will be back for the next warm up game which is against Bedford Athletic on Friday 30th at 7.30pm in Bedford.
The first try scorer for Biggleswade was Jensen Beal who at the end of last season was called up for the East Midlands Under 20s team.
Speedy winger Stevens scored the second and third, as well was one for Harry Lupton. Biggleswade’s strength is in their three-quarters who are lightning quick on the counter attack.
On display were new signings including James Litchfield at number eight and flanker Luke Adde both former Bedford Swifts players. Jack Hill (also Swifts) Jacob Lloyd back from university and Harry Lipton (ex-Samual Whitbread) were on the bench.
Coach Jimmy Hart was very upbeat about the prospects for the season ahead. “I am really excited by the challenges ahead and can’t wait to get started. The Club is in a great place and probably why so many people are joining us all the time.”
The first league match on Saturday 7th September is against Towcestrians who struggled last season.
The match at Langford Road kicks off at 3pm. But before that there are events to celebrate the start of the 75th anniversary. The Club started playing in 1949 with a fixture against a team from RAF Henlow. Festivities start at 1pm.
