Biggleswade 50 Bedford Swifts 18

Biggleswade bounced back from last week’s defeat with a strong performance against the Swifts.

The Biggy pack ruled the roost all afternoon shoving back the scrum and driving over for two tries. After getting married last week Dom Nott returned to the side. He certainly felt the heat especially after some blistering runs.
The Biggleswade three-quarters were stronger in defence and quicker around the park especially on the wings.

Last week after a bright start Biggleswade had to settle for second best. This week they were determined to do much better.
On the hottest day of the year in front of a large crowd Biggleswade put on a good show to honour the memory of club stalwart Richard Phipps who died earlier in the year.
The skipper Jake Deveraux led the way with the first try under the posts after the forwards pushed Swifts off their own scrum put in. Sam Woods added the conversion.

The Swifts soon struck back with a penalty one of too many which Biggleswade conceded unnecessarily. But this reversal encouraged Biggleswade to score again which they quickly did.
After moves left and right centre Ollie Vagg found a hole in the Swifts defence and flew through it for try number two.
Twenty-five minutes into the game the replacements were brought on to give the big boys in the pack some relief. Rolling replacements were the order of the day to reduce over-heating.
One of them Jensen Beal soon got stuck in with a monster tackle which brought admiration from the sidelines.
Another was Aaron Pickering who stated that playing hooker was no fun in the sun! “The worst twenty minutes of me entire playing life,” he complained after the match’s final whistle.
Swifts added a second penalty before Sam Woods again stretched the lead with another try converting it himself. But this was cancelled out when Swifts got the first of their three tries.
Turning round just six points ahead at 19-13 the neutral observer might have thought the result was in the balance.
But Biggleswade were having none of that turning up the gas a couple of notches. They added five more tries split between three-quarter finesse and forward power.
The forwards caught and drove over the try line. Dom Nott got the credit for one and Kyle Loan the other.
The most spectacular was started by Jensen Beal and rounded off in style at the other end of the pitch by a speedy Jack Sharp who easily out-paced the tired Swift’s defence.
Scorers were Jake Deveraux, Ollie Vagg, Sam Woods, John Richardson (2), Dom Nott, Kyle Loan, Jack Sharp. Sam Woods added 5 conversions.

The next fixture is a trip to play Huntingdon on the racecourse with a 3pm kick off.
