Biggleswade started the new year in the same way they finished the old with a win in Counties 2 East (South).

But the match finished five minutes early when the match official suffered a seizure. He had quick medical treatment and was taken to hospital where he had immediate heart surgery.

The Club wishes him well for a full recovery.

Despite all the recent heavy rain the pitch was tacky but very playable. Luton kicked off long but Biggleswade quickly swept downfield threatening an early score.

There were five changes in the team from the last game before Christmas. The replacements were all experienced at first team level except one.

Rory Fookes was making his debut at fly-half as Sam Woods was on the piste. Rory has only had a couple of run outs in the second XV since playing at Twickenham with Samuel Whitbreads. Rory fitted in well distributing the ball and doing more than his share of tackling.

Man-of-the-match though was judged to be the old warhorse Dom Nott. When on the charge he is a fearsome sight shrugging off tacklers and knocking others out of the way like scattered skittles.

Scrum half Joe Rowntree scored the first try which was quickly followed by one from prop Ben Yates. The Biggy machine was getting into top gear so everything looked rosy.

But Biggleswade were soon jolted back to reality when Luton scored two tries . They converted them both to take the lead.  The second Luton try came from a stray kick down the centre of the pitch which was run back when a safe kick to touch was needed.

This reverse meant Biggleswade turned up the gas getting back in to try scoring mode very quickly. Tom Richardson’s try restored the lead which Tom Anderson stretched with the fourth to get the bonus point.

Luton cut the deficit with one penalty but missed a second.

The Biggy pack were starting to get the upper hand which disrupted Luton possession.

As Luton tired Biggleswade just kept going with further tries from Jack Sharp and Michael Hall. Jack converted both to show he has all the skills.

As Biggleswade were pressing hard for a further score the referee collapsed bring the match to a premature end.

Team: Ben Yates, Dom Nott, Kyle Loan, James Emerson, Jake Devereux, Jake Dodds, Liam Dunne, Ben Reedman, Joe Rowntree, Rory Fookes, Tom Anderson, Michael Hall, Tom Richardson, John Richardson, Jack Sharp. Replacements: Matt Horgan, Will Evans, James West.

Next week Brackley visit Langford Road. In the away tie Biggleswade won 35-24 so will be hoping for another win in their promotion challenge.
