Biggleswade Men’s 2nds 10 - 7 St Albans 3rds

In their final home match of the season, Biggy Men’s 2nds showed real fight and resilience against St Albans to remain unbeaten at Langford Road. Saturday’s win means the 2nds still have the chance to become league champions like the 1st team - a feat never before achieved by the club in the same season.

St Albans took the lead after Biggy started slowly. However, calmness was key and Biggleswade secured possession and territory for the rest of the half that allowed them to control the game. Only handling errors and occasional ill discipline stopped Biggy scoring.

With the score 0-7 at the break, Biggy set about winning the second half and the match. Biggy lifted the tempo of the stop start game and the introduction of replacements provided a burst of energy with almost instant rewards.

George Chapman opened the home side’s scoring with a penalty in front of the posts. This gave the platform for Biggy to apply pressure, and their athletic set of backs allowed them to move the ball well. However, the game began to resemble a chess match when both sides made errors and gave penalties away as they took turns working their way into the right areas.

Biggleswade were first to reap rewards for their endeavours. Following a line-out in the 22, quick ball went through the hands and Chris Horgan, running the tight line, went over. Chapman added the extras to see the home side into the lead at 10-7.

The rest of the game was a nervy affair. Biggleswade almost let the visitors back in the game after giving away a penalty in their 22 which the St Alban’s kicker narrowly missed.

Determined to not lose the winning streak at home the 2nd team clung on. Although it wasn’t a vintage performance, determination and self-belief built up throughout the long season saw them hold out.

The final game of the season will be a Friday night fixture on the 22 April away to Saracens Amateurs - if victorious and depending on games being played, the 2nds could win the league.
