Biggleswade Rugby Club is proud to announce the appointment of Matt Skirving as new Head Coach.

Matt, who has coached minis and youth rugby at the club for seven years, is relishing the chance to step up to senior level coaching.

He said: “I am honoured to have been given this opportunity. During my time here I have watched the club progress hugely and I’m looking forward to playing a more leading role in the future of such a special club.

The new Head Coach, aged 39, from Biggleswade, added: “I believe the key to our future success as a team is through playing simple, enjoyable rugby while building a strong sense of community and team work.  The players and club members here have shown real passion to develop and support the success of teams at all age groups, both male and female.”

Matt said his ethos is to bring a calm, inclusive and constructive approach to coaching, allowing the players to contribute and giving them a platform to be creative and take risks in game play.

He added: “There are some very talented players at all levels at the club and I aim to ensure there is a clear progression path for all those younger players wanting to play senior rugby in the future.

“This season I want to hit the ground running.  To achieve that I will be working hard with the players to ensure we are fit and ready for the start of the season.  Pre-season men’s training starts on the first Tuesday night of July 2019.  All those interested in being part of the senior teams are welcome no matter how much experience they have. Just be prepared - it’s going to be a demanding few months to get us all in the right place to start a successful campaign for the 2019/20 season.

“I am really excited to see what the future brings for Biggleswade Rugby Club.”

Dave Tysom, Club Chairman, wished Matt all the best in his new role. “With Matt’s guidance and the support from the players and our team of fellow coaches, we can rebuild a great playing ethos at our club.

“We also welcome Michael Heath, another very committed long-term club member, who will be concentrating on getting us all fighting fit for the new season.

“It’s our 70th year and it’s going to be a special one.”
