Thorney Men’s 1st XV 0 - 87 Biggleswade Men’s 1st XV

Biggleswade Men’s 1st XV faced some extreme weather conditions at Thorney on Saturday for their second Midland 4 East (South) league game of the season

Biggy arrived ready to build on their home win the week before, and despite the wind and rain lashing down all afternoon their spirit and ambition was not dampened.

It only took five minutes for Biggleswade to score the first try of the game, linking well to take advantage of the gaps in the Thorney defence. The terrible conditions did not make it a day for kicking, with the wind dragging the ball away from the posts.

Although the Thorney players worked hard to keep Biggy out, they could not compete with the visitors’ pace and determination as they ran in try after try.

Conversions were attempted after each score, but the weather was so fierce even those in front of the posts were blown wide time after time.

Special mention must go to Dave Grubb as Man of the Match while playing as hooker for the first time at first team level, and to Aaron Williams for scoring possibly the quickest debut try after being on the field for less than two minutes.

Final score 0-87 to Biggleswade.

Biggy take on Aylestone St James at home on Saturday 9 October, which promises to be a challenging game and important in Biggleswade’s efforts to gain promotion this season.
