Biggleswade were soundly depleted by Daventry in Midlands 3 East (South) 7-46 but it was far from a walkover.

Biggleswade knew that they would struggle with a host of injuries and unavailable players. They had to dig deep into their reserves but put out a full squad on the day including a debut for young Ben Wischhussen a chunky seventeen year old who showed a maturity beyond his years.

Conditions were not bad for rugby, dry and cloudy with a moderate breeze. Biggleswade had wind advantage but received the kick off which did not make a good start. They were on the back foot straight away and Daventry secured an early unconverted try.

Biggleswade rallied and pressed hard at the other end. They were almost rewarded with a try. If they had scored the whole pattern of the match might have been different. Daventry rely highly on confidence. If put under pressure Daventry panic and crumble as their losses in the league show.

Instead it was Daventry who added to their tally seeming to score every time they got in Biggy’s “22”. It was not straight away as the home team made them work hard for their points but a gap always showed after numerous passages of play.

Biggleswade were without Michael Haddow and Zack Pates both of whom have a high tackle count. They might have made a difference but not enough to change the pattern of the match. Biggleswade again went close but infringed when almost over the line. A second attempt was
foiled after a catch and drive from a lineout.

Will Roake restored at centre with Gavin Taylor impressed the watching faithful with some deft passages of play. Work stops him appearing very often but he makes a difference when he does turn out.

Instead Daventry added to their tally and finished the first half seventeen points ahead. In the second half there were some terrible periods for a wilting Bedford who conceded two tries twice in quick succession. But heads did’t drop and Biggleswade scored a peach of a try.
The try came as Biggleswade launched a three-quarter move. A cross kick from fly-half Tom Flather flummoxed the two Daventry players covering the threat. The ball bounced up into the arms of flying winger Tom (Plank) Rogers who fed scrum half Luke Gadsby who dived over the line under the posts. Elliot Tunstall added the conversion.

prospect on their own patch.
